The oldest Fleet in continuous operation, tracing its lineage back to the first years of the New Concordat. The Iron Compact was formed by Varath veterans of the pre-Concordat border wars who believed - correctly - that a formal peace treaty wouldn't end actual conflict, only change its form. They positioned themselves as the Varath's credible threat: professional, well-equipped, and expensive enough that their involvement signaled serious Varath interest.

Thirty years later the Iron Compact has evolved into something more complex than its founders intended. It has Keth members. A small but real contingent of Meridian pilots fly under its colors. It takes contracts from TEC and the Beacon Network as readily as from Bastion Arms. The Varath funding still flows, but the Iron Compact is too large and too institutionalized to be simply pointed at a target anymore.

Culture: The Iron Compact runs like a military, because most of its leadership came from one. Ranks are formal. Command authority is clear. Combat doctrine is written down and enforced. New recruits go through an evaluation period before full membership. This produces a Fleet that is extremely reliable and somewhat bureaucratic - they will absolutely deliver on the contract, and they will also file paperwork about it.

What outsiders miss: the Iron Compact has a longer view than most Fleets. They are not maximizing this season's income. They are positioning for a conflict that their senior leadership believes is coming, and which most of their younger pilots have not been briefed on. The briefings will happen if and when the senior leadership decides the time is right.

What they're actually doing: Bastion Arms wants the Ancient site in the Conflict Zone. The Iron Compact is the mechanism for establishing de facto territorial control over it before anyone can formally dispute the claim.
