// FLEETS
The Free Margin
"We're available."
Racial lean: None | Funded by: Contracts (genuinely independent)
Territory: Conflict Zone (central), gate approaches in The Threshold, wherever the current contract is
Fleet colors: Variable (each member guild flies their own; Free Margin ships identified by transponder, not hull color)
The Free Margin is the closest thing to a truly neutral Fleet in the known galaxy. They take contracts from every faction and every race, operate without permanent territorial claims, and maintain a formal policy of accepting opposing contracts from the same client - meaning they will run security for Varath convoy A and then, when that contract ends, run interference against Varath convoy B if the price is right.
This sounds more chaotic than it is. The Free Margin has a code of conduct - it is short and rigorously enforced. They do not betray active contracts. They do not take contracts against former clients within thirty days of contract completion. They do not accept contracts that require harm to civilians unrelated to the operation. Within those constraints, they will work for anyone.
Their member guilds retain autonomy over their own operations and can decline specific contracts, but Fleet leadership decides allocation and sets the overall engagement calendar. The governing structure is a Margin Council - one representative per member guild, majority vote on anything above guild-level decisions.
Culture: The Free Margin is the most diverse Fleet in terms of race, background, and fighting style. What unifies their pilots is pragmatism and professionalism. They are not fighting for a cause. They are exceptionally good at their work and they want to keep getting paid for it. Idealism is considered a liability. Sentimentality is considered a warning sign.
What outsiders miss: The Free Margin's genuine neutrality makes them the most dangerous source of accurate intelligence in the galaxy. They have worked for every major faction, which means they have seen every major faction's operations from the inside. They do not sell this intelligence. But they remember it, and their contract pricing adjusts accordingly.
What they're actually doing: Exactly what they say. This is what makes them unsettling.
